Gestionar a tu jefe – Managing upwards
Gestionar a tu jefe
- Presenta soluciones, no problemas.
Managing upwards
There is a lot written about how to manage your team of co-workers, but less on how to manage your boss. Understanding your superior makes your job easier. These are some guidelines for having a fluent professional relationship with your boss:
- Present solutions, not problems. Before talking to him/her think about possible solutions to the problem you want to share.
- Be a help. Quite often your manager has a manager. Think on ways you can make his job easier by what you do, that he can achieve his goals and can handle the pressure he is getting.
- Communicate with him via his favourite communication mode. If you know he is not answering emails, don’t send him anymore and try to call him or talk to him face-to-face.
- Say no, but explain why. If he asks you to some work and you cannot because you are very busy, ask him “which has the greatest priority?” To make him aware that you cannot do everything.
- Learn to read his code. Identify signals that show that he is open to talk. Find out if it is in the morning or afternoon, at the beginning or at the end of the week, etc.
- Don’t give him nasty surprises. If you foresee any problem, let him know as soon as possible.
- Treat your manager as a person. Sometimes we treat them as a position, a function or even a nuisance. Use your emotional intelligence and think about what he is motivated by and is interested in.
Whether you like it or not, your manager affects greatly your enjoyment and success at work.
