Years ago I read “Fish”, an interesting although simple book, that gives a practical «recipe» to increase the involvement and motivation of a team.
The book is inspired in the way they work at Pike Place Market in Seattle, a famous fish market, where customer service gets to a new dimension… fresh food, fun and «throwing fishes around».
The FISH philosophy consists of 4 ingredients to increase motivation in a team (and yourself).
1. BE THERE: when people need you, they need all of you. Setting aside distractions and judgments to be fully present is a sign of respect.
2. PLAY: you can be serious about your work without taking yourself too seriously. Play is a mindset, more than a specific activity, that helps you find solutions to everyday challenges.
3. MAKE THEIR DAY: simple gestures of thoughtfulness, gratitude and recognition make people feel appreciated and valued. When you make someone else feel good, you feel good too.
4. CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE: choose how you respond to life, not just react, you must be intentional. Choose every day how you want to be that day, moment-to-moment; awareness is the key. Although you sometimes cannot choose your work, you always can choose how you will act (your choice will determine your behaviour). If you feel different, you act different.
… so easy to understand and sometimes so hard to apply…
